As if winning the 40 mile at Rough Creek in 2015 isn’t impressive enough, Nicole Kalogeropoulos’ (formerly Studer) trail running résumé is arguably world class. 2015 included a win at Rocky Raccoon 100 setting both a course record, lowering it an astounding 35 minutes, and North American 100 mile trail record (14:22), as well as finishing 6th female at Western States Endurance Run. She was kind enough to share some insights about Rough Creek:
1) Why should runners be interested in running Rough Creek?
“The Rough Creek course is one of my favorite courses in Texas, as it is very diverse. Not only is it extremely challenging with steep climbs and descents, but it also offers longs sections of rolling hills that allow you to gain some momentum and pick up speed. The course also offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.”
2) What advice do you have for runners to be successful at Rough Creek?
“I recommend starting out conservatively, as there is a long section of steep climbing and technically descents towards the end of the course. In my experience, it also gets very warm during the Texas fall weather, so it is important to stay well hydrated and fueled. I definitely recommend wearing a hat and sunscreen.”
3) Tell us a memory from your race at Rough Creek.
“I have so many memories from last year, but in particular, I remember all the friendly faces I met along the trail. As with many trail races, I noticed that so many runners were encouraging each other during the steep ascents on the course, so it was nice to witness all the camaraderie.”
